We are sorry to announce the temporary closure of the Sutton Hall Railway due to urgent Boiler repairs needed for Morning Star. Leakage has been discovered in one of the boiler tubes. This, although not yet dangerous must be attended to as further deterioration will make it more difficult to repair in the future.
Hot gases from the fire pass through these tubes which are immersed in the water. This heats the water and turns it into steam to drive the engine. Leakage from boiler tubes is not unknown but for safety reasons we have decided to take action now.
Eighteen new tubes will be required and will cost about £2000. This is specialist work and will require a boiler stripdown. This will give us the opportunity to do other work to bring the 50 year engine up to full specification.
